Laser Terminology & Features

Understanding the technology behind Spectra Precision lasers — from warranty programs to advanced features like PlaneLok, Grade Matching, and Fingerprinting.

Warranty & Service

Shockproof Construction: All Spectra Precision products marked with the Shockproof icon are designed to withstand a 3-foot drop onto concrete and a 5-foot tripod tip-over — reducing downtime and repair costs on demanding job sites.

Spectra Precision offers three distinct warranty programs depending on the product:

Standard Warranty

1, 3, or 5-year coverage for manufacturing defects. On Shockproof-rated products, parts and labor are also covered if the unit is dropped or knocked over within the specified heights.

“No-Excuses” Exchange

Free over-the-counter exchange with any authorized Spectra Precision dealer while the product is within warranty terms. No hassle, no questions.

Supplemental Exchange

Instant over-the-counter exchange worldwide at any Spectra Precision dealer — no receipt required. Failed products are replaced with a new unit at the typical repair cost for the specified period.

Key Features & Technology

PlaneLok

A radio link between the laser and the receiver that locks the laser beam to a fixed elevation or direction. The laser actively maintains beam position on the receiver — improving accuracy, eliminating drift caused by vibration or temperature changes, and making it ideal for applications like concrete pads that demand tight tolerances.

Grade Matching

Allows you to match the fall of the ground or match between two existing elevations without complex calculations.

  • Manual Grade Matching: After measuring laser height, take the receiver to the target elevation and slope the laser until the beam hits the on-grade position on the receiver.
  • Automatic Grade Matching: The laser and receiver communicate via radio and the beam is automatically driven to the on-grade position. Some models also display the actual grade value.
Digital Read-Out Receiver (HL Series)

Spectra Precision’s HL-prefix receivers feature a patented design that delivers consistent accuracy across the entire operating range. Instead of manually positioning the receiver on-grade, the digital display shows exactly how far from on-grade you are — allowing faster, more accurate work.

Readouts switch between metric and English units. When paired with compatible lasers, these receivers enable PlaneLok, Automatic Grade Matching, and Axis Alignment.

Automatic Axis Alignment

When working with grade, even a slight mis-alignment can cause significant errors over distance. Automatic Axis Alignment lets the laser communicate with the receiver placed on the grade hub and self-align automatically — within a ±40° range — eliminating manual setup error and speeding up configuration.

Fingerprinting (Multi-Laser Jobsites)

Introduced with the HL760 receiver, Fingerprinting lets you pair a receiver with a specific laser. Once paired, the receiver filters out all other laser signals — including other brands — and responds only to its assigned laser. When unpaired, the receiver can detect all red-beam laser brands. All lasers marked with the Fingerprint icon support this feature when used with the HL760.

Shockproof Protection

Spectra Precision lasers marked with the Shockproof icon are built to survive real job site abuse:

  • 3-foot drop onto concrete
  • 5-foot tripod tip-over protected

While calibration cannot always be guaranteed after a drop, the most expensive internal components remain protected — significantly reducing lifetime running costs.

Vertical Applications

Several Spectra Precision lasers are self-leveling in the vertical axis, making them ideal for:

  • Formwork and foundations
  • 90° reference lines
  • Fencing, facades, and wall layout

HV-Series, GL400-Series, GL600-Series, and UL-Series models all support vertical use. The PlaneLok function works in both horizontal and vertical positions. Laser clamps and receiver brackets are available for quick vertical setup.
