iDig CONNECT — 2D / 2D+ / 3D

Start where you are.
Step up without starting over.

Wireless, solar-powered sensors that install in an afternoon and move between machines in minutes. Buy the level you need today — the control box and the sensors never change, so stepping up later costs you a licence or a GPS, not a new system.

Which one do I need?

Three answers. The honest one depends on your machine and whether you want to keep moving a laser around the site.

2D

You already run a laser

  • Excavator machine control, working from your rotary laser or a benchmark
  • Depth and slope on screen in the cab, in real time
  • Tightest accuracy of the three — ± 3/8 in
  • 2D+ upgradeable whenever you want it

Needs: a rotary laser. No GPS, no base station, no subscription. Excavators only — a skid steer has no stick to mount the laser receiver on.

2D+

You want the laser gone

  • Everything 2D does, with the reference taken from satellites instead
  • Nobody walks back to move a laser, and nothing gets knocked out of level
  • Detach the receiver and survey points, measure distances, locate buried services
  • The only way a skid steer or track loader can run

Needs: a GNSS base station or rover. Own one already and you are set.

3D

You work from design files

  • Import the plan, see the 3D model and the depth to dig, updated live
  • No design? Build a model from inside the cab
  • Stake out, calculate areas and volumes, close out as-builts
  • Design data in from Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive or a USB stick

Needs: a GNSS base station or rover, plus the 3D licence.

You never replace anything

The same control box. The same sensors. The same mounts. Moving from 2D to 2D+ is adding a GPS — iDig's own words are that it “completely eliminates the use of a reference laser.” Moving to 3D is a licence on the box you already own. There is no wrong starting point, which is the whole reason the range is built this way.

Questions

Straight answers before you buy

What is the difference between 2D, 2D+ and 3D?
Where the height reference comes from. 2D reads a rotary laser. 2D+ takes it from satellites instead, which removes the laser from the job entirely. 3D adds design files, so the screen shows the model and the depth to dig rather than a single reference height. The hardware is identical across all three.
Can a skid steer run 2D?
No. 2D works by catching a rotating laser, and on an excavator the receiver sensor lives on the stick. A skid steer has no stick to put it on, so it takes its reference from satellites instead. That is 2D+, and it is why a GNSS base station or rover is part of the skid steer package rather than an optional extra.
If I start at 2D, what does stepping up actually cost?
A GPS, not a system. The control box, the sensors and the mounts all stay. Adding a base station or rover takes the excavator package to 2D+ with no further iDig licence needed. Full 3D does need a licence on top, on the same box you already own.
Do I have to buy iDig's own GPS?
No. iDig offers the SpotMan, and iDig 2D+ and 3D are compatible with other GNSS receivers. If you already own a base station or a rover you are set — order the package as it is and use what you have.
How long does installation take?
One to two hours for a typical excavator. The sensors are solar-rechargeable and talk over Bluetooth 5, so nothing is welded and no cable is run to any sensor. They mount magnetically on plates and unclip to move to another machine in about five minutes.
Can one system cover more than one machine?
Yes, one machine at a time. The control box stores up to 100 machines with up to 100 bucket profiles each, and the sensors move across in minutes. A second machine needs its own sensor plate kit, not another licence — unless it is a different machine type, which needs that type's licence.
What accuracy should I expect?
± 3/8 in on 2D from a laser, which is the tightest of the three. On 2D+ and 3D the accuracy follows your GNSS: roughly 0.8 cm horizontal and 1.5 cm vertical with a proper RTK correction. Network solutions that quote around 10 cm are not accurate enough to set grade from.
