A Direct Reading (Lenker style) grade rod has a moveable tape face that lets you dial in the actual benchmark elevation—or any reference elevation—directly into the rod. From that point forward, your laser detector reads the true elevation above sea level on every shot. No adding. No subtracting. Since no math is involved, grade shots are significantly faster than conventional rods, and the chance of arithmetic error drops to zero. Ideal anywhere the bench elevation is established by survey and all subsequent shots are referenced above or below that primary bench.
