Not a lesser receiver. The same one, supplied on its own.
The BR in HL450-BR stands for Bare Receiver. It is the HL450 Laserometer in the box with its batteries and manual, and without the C45 rod clamp.
Nothing is removed from the receiver and nothing is downgraded. Every specification on this page is identical to the standard HL450: the same 4 inch detection height, the same 3 inch numeric readout, the same three precision levels, the same IP67 housing, the same warranty.
Spectra list it as its own part number for a simple reason — a clamp outlasts several receivers, and plenty of buyers already have one.

What does BR stand for on the Spectra HL450-BR?
Bare Receiver. It is the HL450 Laserometer supplied on its own — the receiver, batteries and manual, without the C45 rod clamp. Nothing is removed from the receiver itself and nothing is downgraded. Spectra list it as a separate part number because plenty of buyers already own a clamp and have no use for another.
What is the difference between the HL450 and the HL450-BR?
One thing only: the C45 rod clamp. The standard HL450 ships with it, the HL450-BR does not. The receiver is identical in both — same 4 inch detection height, same 3 inch numeric readout, same three precision levels, same IP67 housing, same 70+ hour battery, same warranty. If you already have a clamp, the BR is the one to order.
Do I need a rod clamp to use the HL450-BR?
You need some way to mount it. If it is going on a grade rod then yes, you need a clamp — the Spectra C45 is the one made for this receiver and we stock it separately. If the receiver is going onto a fixture, a jig or a bracket you already have, you may not need one at all. Ring us on 1-877-866-5721 if you are unsure what fits.
Is the HL450-BR a refurbished or older unit?
No. It is a new, current-production HL450 receiver with the full Spectra warranty. The only difference is what is in the box.
What is the difference between reception height and smart reading height?
They are two separate numbers. Total laser detection height is 102 mm (4 inches) — the whole window in which the receiver sees the beam and shows you proportional arrows. The numeric readout band, the smart reading, is 76 mm (3 inches) — the middle portion where it displays an actual figure for how far off grade you are, to ±40 mm (±1.5 inches). So across 4 inches you know which way to move, and across the middle 3 inches you know exactly how far.
How accurate is it?
Three selectable dead-bands: Fine at 1.0 mm (0.05 inches, 1/16 inch), Medium at 5.0 mm (0.20 inches, 1/4 inch) and a Calibration setting at 0.1 mm (0.01 inches, 1/64 inch). Pick the tolerance the work needs rather than living with one setting.
Which lasers does the HL450-BR work with?
Any rotating laser in the red spectrum — it detects 610 to 900 nm, so it is not tied to Spectra transmitters. Working radius is 1 to 200 m (3 to 650 feet) depending on the laser. For a green beam you need a green-capable receiver such as the HL760U; the HL450-BR is red only.
How tough is it?
Waterproof and dust-proof to IP67, so a concrete splash or a puddle is a hose-down rather than a repair, and rated to survive a direct 5 foot (1.5 m) drop onto concrete. Backed by a 3 year limited warranty with 2 years of free over-the-counter exchange. The 10 foot drop figure you may see in Spectra’s range brochure carries the footnote “based upon models” and belongs to the HL700 and HL760 — this receiver is rated to 5 feet.
How long do the batteries last?
Over 70 hours on two ordinary AA batteries, with a 30 minute automatic shut-off for the days it gets left switched on. No proprietary pack to charge.
Can I read it from both sides of the rod?
Yes. There is a large LCD on the front and another on the back that repeats it, so you can read grade from either side without walking round. An adjustable tone calls high, low and on grade, with three volume settings.
Does it have anti-strobe protection?
Yes. The HL450 has an anti-strobe sensor that reduces false indication from strobe lights — the hazard beacons on plant and vehicles that a plain receiver can mistake for a laser strike. A false strike means a false grade, so it matters more than it sounds.
