Spectra ships the CR700 with both mounts. There is no “machine version” and “rod version” to choose between, and nothing else to buy before it earns its keep.

The CR700 uses the same patented Light Bar technology as Spectra’s HL receivers, with a two-way radio and six accuracy settings on top of it.

Light Bar Technology

Accuracy that does not change with the laser’s beam diameter, so a reading at 20 ft and a reading at 400 ft agree. Fewer electronic components than a conventional receiver, which is a large part of why it survives the job site.

Three Ways to Mount It

Machine, rod, or vertical.

The same receiver, three jobs. This is what “combination receiver” actually means.

Machine mounted

Clip the CR700 into the C71 magnet clamp and put it on the dipper stick. Set the deadband to 5, 10 or 25 mm, plumb the stick with the bucket on a benchmark, and adjust to green. While digging, bring the stick to plumb and lower to depth to read height from grade. Backhoes, skid steers, mini excavators, footers, drainage ditches and farm tile.

Drop it into the C70 clamp and onto any grade rod — square or round, the jaw adjusts. Set deadband and volume, put the rod on a benchmark and adjust to on-grade. From there the LED arrows show high and low while the LCD gives you the exact distance off grade.

Vertical / alignment

With the laser in vertical mode the CR700 handles alignment work, and the drift alarm warns you if the laser gets bumped after the line is set. It sits straight on a floor slab, or on the optional 105516 vertical adapter for a batter board or a 5/8×11 or 1/4 in. tripod.

Settings

Every control you need,
on three buttons.

Deadband, brightness and volume are one press each. Everything else lives in a short menu, and the CR700 remembers your settings after power off.

Menu	What it does
LGHT	LCD backlight on or off.
RDIO	LS pairs with a laser · HL pairs with another receiver as a remote display · OF turns the radio off.
PAIR	Pairs with the selected device, laser or receiver.
UNIT	Millimetres, centimetres, decimal inches, fractional inches or feet.
SENS	Medium is the default. HI increases distance; LO improves strobe-light rejection.
FRC.R	Fractional reduction. On, 4/8 in. reads as 1/2 in. Off, the denominator stays fixed — useful for checking fine surface flatness.
DRFT	Vertical-mode drift alarm: beeps if the laser is disturbed after the line is set.
FPRT	Fingerprint. On, the CR700 reacts only to the paired laser and rejects all others.

One operating note straight from the user guide: do not power the CR700 up while it is sitting in a laser beam. It is ready once CAL clears from the LCD.

Pairing

Two receivers, one reading,
660 feet apart.

The CR700’s radio does more than talk to the laser. Pair two CR700s — or a CR700 and an HL760 — and one catches the beam while the other shows you the number where you actually are.

Set both to receiver mode

On each unit: menu → RDIO → RDIO HL. That is the setting Spectra labels “connect with another receiver for remote display.”

Pair them to each other

Scroll to PAIR and press enter on both units, then power the receiver off.

First on is the laser receiver

The first unit powered on reads the beam. The second shows RMT.D okay — press enter and it becomes the remote display.

Why crews do it

The receiver that sees the laser and the person who needs the number are rarely in the same place. Pairing puts the reading where the decision gets made.

The unit magnet-mounted to the dipper stick is down in the hole, caked in dirt, or simply behind the operator. The paired unit in the cab shows the same cut or fill number in plain sight — so nobody climbs down to read a receiver, and nobody stands in the trench holding a rod.

► Fingerprinting keeps the pair honest

With FPRT ON the receiver locks to your paired laser and rejects strikes from every other laser on site, and the radio link itself carries a security lock to the paired device. On a job with three crews running three lasers, that is the difference between a reading and a guess.

Frequently asked questions

Does the CR700 come with both the magnetic mount and the rod clamp?

Yes. The box holds the CR700 receiver, the C71 magnetic machine mount, the C70 grade rod clamp, 3 x AA alkaline batteries and the user guide. Both mounts are included, so the same receiver goes on a machine or on a grade rod with nothing else to buy.

Can I pair two CR700s together?

Yes. Set both to RDIO HL, pair them, then power off. The first receiver powered back on reads the laser and the second displays RMT.D okay and becomes the remote display, up to 200 m (660 ft) away. A CR700 pairs with an HL760 exactly the same way, so one can sit on the machine while the other rides in the cab or in your hand.

What lasers does the CR700 work with?

It works with all rotating lasers in the 610 to 780 nm range. The radio functions — Grade Match, PlaneLok, Axis Alignment and Fingerprinting — need a Spectra Precision grade laser or the HV302, because those functions run over the two-way radio link.

How accurate is it?

There are six deadband settings: Ultra Fine 0.5 mm, Super Fine 1.0 mm, Fine 2.0 mm, Medium 5.0 mm, Coarse 10.0 mm and Machine 25.0 mm. Fine settings are for grade checking off a rod; Spectra recommends 5, 10 or 25 mm when the receiver is machine mounted.

What batteries does it take, and how long do they last?

Three 1.5 V AA alkaline cells, included. Expect 60+ hours of run time, or about 16 hours with the backlight running continuously. The receiver shuts itself off after 30 minutes of inactivity.

Will it survive being dropped?

It is warranted to withstand a 3 m (10 ft) drop onto concrete, and it is sealed to IP67 against water and dust. The whole unit carries a three-year warranty.

Can it be used for vertical or alignment work?

Yes. With the laser in vertical mode, turn the drift alarm on and the CR700 warns you if the laser is disturbed after your line is set. It can sit directly on a floor slab, and the optional vertical adapter (PN 105516, sold separately) mounts it to a batter board or onto a 5/8 x 11 or 1/4 in. tripod thread.

How is the CR700 different from an HL760?

Both have the same 5 in. detection height and 4 in. numeric readout, and both carry the two-way radio. The CR700 is the one that ships with a magnetic clamp for mounting on a machine, and it runs on 3 x AA cells; the HL760 is a rod and hand receiver and runs on 2 x AA. If the receiver is going on a backhoe, skid steer or mini excavator, the CR700 is the one.

CR700 vs the HL receivers.

The CR700 is the only one of these that magnet-mounts to a machine. Everything else in the family is a rod and hand receiver. If the receiver is going on a backhoe, skid steer or mini excavator, this is the one.

This is the perfect receiver for working off a backhoe with the magnetic mount. Buy a DM-20 bolt-on mount and you can be even more versatile and work off your loader or blade on either side of your equipment. In conjunction with compatible receivers, you can use the second receiver as a remote display. Really great buy for the price.
