Topcon RL-200 2S — Straight Answers
From the Topcon RL-200 2S instruction manual, and from setting these up for customers.
How accurate is the Topcon RL-200 2S?
Topcon rates it at ±7 arc seconds. In plain terms that is about 3/64 inch at 100 feet (1 mm at 30 m), and about 5/64 inch at 200 feet. It self-levels when it is set up within ±5° of level.
What grade can it set?
On two axes at once: X from -10% to +10% and Y from -5% to +25%. On a single axis it will do X -10% to +10% or Y -5% to +25%.
What does the RC-400 remote do?
It sets grade, rotation speed and beam masking without walking back to the laser, at up to about 300 m (980 ft), and turns the laser on and off. It runs on three AA batteries and switches itself off after 60 seconds idle.
How far does it reach?
About 6 to 3,600 ft (2 to 1,100 m) in diameter with the LS-80X receiver. Topcon rates that range with the LS-80L, and the LS-80X is its direct replacement with the same specifications. With the LS-110D digital receiver it is about 2,620 ft (800 m) or more, per Topcon’s LS-110D specifications.
Which rotation speed should I use?
It runs at 300, 600 or 900 rpm. Use 600 rpm or faster with a machine receiver, so the display updates quickly enough to follow on a moving machine.
How long do the batteries last?
About 90 hours on the Ni-MH BT-67Q pack, or about 100 hours on four D-cell alkalines, at 68°F. A full charge takes about seven hours.
What if I forget to charge it?
You keep working. Per the Topcon manual the BT-67Q pack can be charged while the laser is running, and the pack can be lifted out of the DB-75C holder and replaced with four D-cell alkaline batteries.
Can I use it in the rain?
Yes. It is rated IP66 for dust and water, and works from -4°F to 122°F.
What happens if the tripod gets bumped?
With the safety lock, also called height alert, switched on, the laser stops auto-leveling when its setup is disturbed. The head either stops or turns slowly to warn you, so you never shoot grade from a moved setup. Turn it off and on to re-level.
Can I block the beam in one direction?
Yes. Beam masking shuts the laser off in the directions you choose, so it will not disturb another laser or a crew working nearby.
What does it weigh, and what tripod does it fit?
About 7.9 lb with the BT-67Q pack, or 7.5 lb with dry cells. It fits a standard 5/8 x 11 tripod, flat or dome head.
Is it a Class 3R laser?
Yes. Topcon classifies the RL-200 as a Class 3R visible red laser product.
