Green beam only. It will not detect a red laser.
The Rod Eye 120G detects 500 to 570 nanometres — the green part of the spectrum. Red rotating lasers emit at roughly 635 to 650 nm, outside that range, so the 120G will not pick up a red beam at all.
Running a green laser such as the Leica Rugby 640G? This is your receiver. Running a red laser — a Rugby 610, 620, 640 or 680 — you want the Rod Eye 120 Basic (789922) instead.

The Leica Rod Eye 120G is a green beam laser receiver for levelling and layout with any green rotating laser. Where a basic receiver only tells you high, low or on grade, the 120G puts a number on the screen — your offset from the beam — across a 70 mm readout, in millimetres, centimetres, inches, fractional inches or feet.
It reads from either side thanks to large graphic LCDs front and back, gives you three selectable bandwidths from ±1 mm to ±3 mm, runs 50+ hours on two AA batteries, and is sealed to IP67. Leica supply it as article 844745 — receiver and bracket.

The 120G does not just beep at you. It shows how far you are from the beam as a number across a 70 mm readout, in millimetres, centimetres, inches, fractional inches or feet. That makes height readings and working to an offset quick instead of fiddly.

Will the Leica Rod Eye 120G work with a red beam laser?
No. This is the single most important thing to know before you order. The 120G detects 500 to 570 nm, which is the green part of the spectrum. Red rotating lasers emit at roughly 635 to 650 nm, which falls outside the 120G’s detection range entirely — it will not pick up a red beam at all. If you are running a red laser such as a Rugby 610, 620, 640 or 680, you want the Rod Eye 120 Basic (789922) instead. Not sure which beam colour your laser is? Which Leica lasers does the Rod Eye 120G pair with?
Any green beam rotating laser, and in Leica’s range that means the Rugby 640G. The 120G is in fact the receiver Leica supply inside the Rugby 640G package (article 6011487), so if you own that laser this is the matched receiver — and the one to buy as a spare or a second unit for another crew member.
What is the difference between the Rod Eye 120G and the Rod Eye 120 Basic?
More than the beam colour, which surprises people. The obvious difference is that the 120G reads green (500 to 570 nm) and the 120 Basic reads red (600 to 800 nm). But the 120G also adds a digital readout — a 70 mm numeric display of your offset from the beam — which the 120 Basic does not have at all, and it has an 11 channel arrow display against the Basic’s 9. The trade is range: the 120G works to a 400 m diameter against the Basic’s 900 m. So the 120G is the better receiver at shorter range, on a green laser.
Does the Rod Eye 120G have a digital readout?
Yes. It displays your offset from the beam as a number over a 70 mm readout, in millimetres, centimetres, inches, fractional inches or feet, on large LCD displays on both the front and the back of the receiver. Within the 120 family that readout is unique to the 120G.
How accurate is the Rod Eye 120G?
It has three selectable detection bandwidths: Fine at ±1 mm, Medium at ±2 mm and Coarse at ±3 mm. Choose the one that suits the tolerance of the work rather than being stuck with one setting.
How far will the Rod Eye 120G pick up the beam?
Leica rate it at a 400 m (1,312 feet) working diameter, which is roughly 200 m (656 feet) out from the laser in any direction. The figure is laser dependent, so a more powerful green laser will reach further than a weaker one.
Does it come with a bracket?
Yes. Leica supply article 844745 as the Rod Eye 120G and bracket, so the rod clamp is in the box along with the user manual. There is nothing else to buy to mount it on a grade rod.
Does the Rod Eye 120G have anti-strobe protection?
No, and we would rather tell you than have you find out on site. Anti-strobe protection, an LED display and last-beam-strike memory are features Leica fit to the Rod Eye 140 Classic and 160 Digital, not to the 120 or the 120G. If you work around vehicle hazard strobes and you are on a red laser, look at the 140 or 160. There is currently no green receiver in the Rod Eye range with anti-strobe.
How long do the batteries last?
Over 50 hours on two standard AA batteries. No proprietary pack, nothing to charge — carry a spare pair and you are never off the job.
Is it waterproof?
Yes, it is rated IP67, which means waterproof and dust-proof. It will take a hose-down and it will survive being dropped in a puddle. Leica back it with a 3 year warranty.
