Q: What is the Spectra GL412N-BL?

A Contractors-Tools.com custom kit built around the Spectra GL412N self-leveling single grade laser, which does three jobs: level, grade on one axis, and vertical alignment, read with a receiver (not included in this kit).

Q: What is the difference between the GL412N and the GL422N?

Same laser, same accuracy and range. The GL412N takes an entered grade on one axis (Y); the GL422N takes a grade on both X and Y. If you only ever slope one direction, such as a pipe run, a driveway or a single-fall slab, the GL412N does the job.

Q: Can I enter a slope percentage, like 2%?

Yes. The GL412N is an automatic single grade laser: you type the grade into the Y axis on the keypad or the RC1402 remote, from -10% to +15%, and it self-levels to it. You do not have to tilt it by hand.

Q: How accurate is it?

Leveling accuracy is ±1.5 mm at 30 m (1/16 in at 100 ft); grade accuracy is ±3.0 mm at 30 m (1/8 in at 100 ft), per the Spectra GL412N/GL422N user guide.

Q: How far does it work?

Up to 2,600 ft working diameter (about 1,300 ft from the laser) with a receiver, so one setup covers a large job site.

Q: How much grade can it run?

From -10% to +15% on the Y axis. It self-levels within ±5° (±9%); for grades past 9% you pre-tilt the laser.

Q: Is the GL412N-BL Spectra’s package or a Contractors-Tools.com kit?

It is a Contractors-Tools.com custom kit: the GL412N laser and its rechargeable batteries, with no case. Spectra’s own package is the GL412N. We customize kits so you get what you need to complete the job.

Q: Is there a remote?

No. This kit has no RC1402 remote; the keypad on the laser does everything. The RC1402 is sold separately and works from up to 330 ft.

Q: How long does the battery last? What if I forget to charge it?

The rechargeable NiMH pack runs typically 35 hours and charges in about 13 hours. It also runs on 4 D-cell alkaline batteries (not included, about 50 hours), and indoors the charger can power the laser, so a missed charge does not end your day.

Single grade. Enter a grade on the Y axis from -10% to +15%; it self-levels to it and holds the other axis level.
1/16″ at 100 ft level, 1/8″ at 100 ft on grade. 300 / 600 rpm.
Self-levels within ±5° (±9%); grades past 9% need the laser pre-tilted.
Every function is on the laser’s own keypad; the RC1402 radio remote is sold separately.
HI alert: bump the tripod and it stops and warns you, instead of letting you work off a bad setup.

Spectra Precision GL412N video — GL412N + CR700: 6 Ways It Keeps Crews Accurate

The GL412N with the CR700 receiver on the jobsite: grade, remote, Grade Match and PlaneLok.

How It Works

Grade, Two Ways — Type It or Step It.

Press M, pick Grade, press E. The GL412N gives you two ways to put the number in, and you choose which one in the Settings menu. Either way it self-levels to the new grade, and the “A” symbols flash on the screen until it is there.

Digit Select (the default)

A cursor flashes on the Y grade. Left and Right move it digit by digit, Up and Down set each digit and the sign. Press E and the laser goes to grade. Hold Manual for 2 seconds to zero it.

Step and Go

Hold Up or Down and the grade changes, faster the longer you hold. Hold both together and it jumps to 0% and then moves in whole 1% steps. Press E to confirm.

Manual tilt

Press Manual and the arrows tilt the beam by hand on either axis, with no number entered. Press it again to go back to automatic.

Grade in percent or degrees

Read grade the way your plans are written: percent, degrees, or per mille (‰, tenths of a percent). Pick it once in the laser’s Settings menu, along with the HI alert time and the sensitivity.

Know your laser before it leaves the case.

Spectra GL412N keypad controls: Menu and Enter buttons, slope arrows, manual/standby button, power button, level LED, HI/manual LED and battery LED — **The keypad.** M opens the menu, E confirms, the arrows set grade, and Manual doubles as Standby. The RC1402 remote mirrors it.

Spectra GL412N peripherals: metal sunshade, sighting guides, beam exit, 5/8 x 11 tripod mount and rubber feet — **The housing.** Metal sunshade, sighting guides for aiming at the receiver, and 5/8 x 11 mounts for horizontal and vertical setups.

Grade Match and PlaneLok need a radio receiver. This kit has no receiver, so add an HL760 or a CR700 to use the two functions below. Everything above works with any red-beam receiver.

Grade Match

Match a grade that already exists.

Set up over the first point

Put the HL760 on a grade rod and take the reading beside the laser.

Walk the rod to the second point

Up to 330 ft out on the laser’s Y axis. Do not move the receiver on the rod.

Aim the laser

Turn it on the tripod with the sighting guides until it roughly faces the receiver.

Start it

M, choose Grade Match, E, pick the Y axis, E. The HL760 flashes -GM- while the laser searches.

Read the grade

The laser and the remote show the measured grade. Press Manual to leave Grade Match.

PlaneLok

Lock the beam to a point and keep it there.

Fix the receiver

Mount the HL760 at the second point, on grade, where it can stay for the job.

Aim the laser

Up to 330 ft away on the Y axis (horizontal) or the X axis (vertical).

Start it

M, choose PlaneLok, E, pick the axis, E. The HL760 flashes -PL- and stops when it is locked.

Leave it running

The laser keeps servoing to the receiver. Lose the signal for a minute and it goes to HI alert rather than drift.

Vertical PlaneLok: fit the 105516 adapter, photocell at the bottom, and keep the HL760 at least 2 ft off the ground.

Two Things Worth Knowing.

Power: rechargeable, with an alkaline backup

The NiMH pack runs 35 hours and charges in about 13 hours. Forget to charge it and the laser still runs on 4 D-cell alkalines (not included), and indoors the charger can power it directly. Never take the cells out of the rechargeable holder to fit alkalines: Spectra warns that charging will then damage the unit.

Check it before the job, and after any drop

The GL412N carries a 5-year warranty on materials and workmanship, but calibration is the user’s responsibility. The 100 ft wall check takes a few minutes after a 20-minute warm-up; it is step by step in the user guide under Downloads.

Reading the Lights

What the LEDs Are Telling You.

Green, flashing once a second

Self-leveling. Wait for it.

Green, solid, then a flash every 4 seconds

Level, and the HI alert is armed. Solid for the first 5 minutes or 30 seconds, depending on your HI alert setting.

Red HI/MAN, flashing once a second

Manual mode: the beam is not self-leveling.

Red HI/MAN, flashing every 5 seconds

Standby: the beam is off, the HI alert stays on. Hold Manual 3 seconds to wake it.

Red battery LED flashing

Battery getting low (3.8 to 4.0 V). Solid red means charge it now.

What is the difference between the GL412N and the GL422N?

Same laser, same accuracy and range. The GL412N takes an entered grade on one axis (Y); the GL422N takes a grade on both X and Y. If you only ever slope one direction, such as a pipe run, a driveway or a single-fall slab, the GL412N does the job.

Can I enter a slope percentage, like 2%?

Yes. The GL412N is an automatic single grade laser: you type the grade into the Y axis on the keypad or the RC1402 remote, from -10% to +15%, and it self-levels to it. You do not have to tilt it by hand.

How accurate is it?

Leveling accuracy is ±1.5 mm at 30 m (1/16 in at 100 ft); grade accuracy is ±3.0 mm at 30 m (1/8 in at 100 ft), per the Spectra GL412N/GL422N user guide.

How far does it work?

Up to 2,600 ft working diameter (about 1,300 ft from the laser) with a receiver, so one setup covers a large job site.

How much grade can it run?

From -10% to +15% on the Y axis. It self-levels within ±5° (±9%); for grades past 9% you pre-tilt the laser.

Is the GL412N-BL Spectra’s package or a Contractors-Tools.com kit?

It is a Contractors-Tools.com custom kit: the GL412N laser and its rechargeable batteries, with no case. Spectra’s own package is the GL412N. We customize kits so you get what you need to complete the job.

Will my receiver work with it?

Any receiver that reads a red rotating beam will read the GL412N for level, grade and plumb. Grade Match, PlaneLok and Fingerprinting need a Spectra radio receiver, the HL760 or the CR700.

Is there a remote?

No. This kit has no RC1402 remote; the keypad on the laser does everything. The RC1402 is sold separately and works from up to 330 ft.

How long does the battery last? What if I forget to charge it?

The rechargeable NiMH pack runs typically 35 hours and charges in about 13 hours. It also runs on 4 D-cell alkaline batteries (not included, about 50 hours), and indoors the charger can power the laser, so a missed charge does not end your day.

How tough is it?

IP66 dust and water protected, with a metal sunshade, and built to survive drops of up to 3 ft onto concrete and tripod tip-overs up to 5 ft. Check accuracy after any drop.

What is the warranty?

5 years on the GL412N laser for materials and workmanship (calibration is not covered).

How do I dial in a grade?

Press M, choose Grade, press E, set each digit with the arrow buttons and press E again (Digit Select). Or switch to Step and Go in Settings and hold an arrow to step the grade. The RC1402 remote does the same from up to 330 ft.

Can it measure the slope of existing ground?

Yes. Grade Match measures the grade between two points with the HL760, up to 330 ft out on the Y axis, and shows it on the laser and the remote. This needs a radio receiver (HL760 or CR700), not included in this kit.

What does PlaneLok do?

PlaneLok locks the beam onto the HL760 at a fixed point by radio, so temperature and weather do not move your elevation. It works horizontally on the Y axis and vertically on the X axis, up to 330 ft. This needs a radio receiver (HL760 or CR700), not included in this kit.

What happens if someone bumps the tripod?

The height-of-instrument (HI) alert stops rotation, turns the beam off and shows a warning, so you do not keep working off a bad setup. You can set it to 5 minutes (default), 30 seconds or off.

Can I use it vertically?

Yes. Lay it on its side and it detects vertical when switched on. Line Scan centres the beam and the arrow buttons move the line, for anchor bolts, forms and layout.

Can I keep the beam off other crews’ receivers?

Yes. Mask mode switches the beam off in up to 3 of the 4 lighthouse windows. It always powers up with mask mode off.

How do I check calibration?

Set up 100 ft from a wall, let it warm up 20 minutes, set 0.000%, and mark the beam on +Y and -Y. If the marks differ by more than 1/8 in, it needs calibrating. Repeat for the X axis. The full procedure is in the user guide under Downloads.

Troubleshooting 2

The screen shows Error 120. What happened?

The HI alert tripped: the laser’s height changed, usually a bumped tripod or a sinking leg. Press E to clear it, then re-check your elevation against your benchmark before you keep working.

Error 130 during Grade Match or PlaneLok?

The laser hit its mechanical limit. Spectra’s fix: check whether the existing slope is above ±9%, and if it is, pre-tilt the laser toward the slope and try again.
