The short answer. The Leica Rugby 610 is the one-button levelling laser, the 620 adds manual slope, the 640 works horizontally, vertically and at 90°, and the 680 dials in grade on both axes. Each section below has Leica’s how-to video for that laser.
Key takeaways
  • Six Leica Geosystems videos: how to use the Rugby 610, 620, 640 and 680, how to use the Rod Eye 160 Digital receiver, and the Rugby 640 unboxing.
  • The 610 and 620 self-level within ±5° and hold ±3/32" at 100 ft; the 680 holds ±1/16" at 100 ft.
  • The 620 sets slope by hand; the 680 dials in a percentage grade on X and Y, up to ±8%.
  • The 640 adds vertical, 90° and Scan 90 for interior and exterior layout.
  • Every Rugby kit includes a Rod Eye receiver; the receiver sets how far the laser reads.

Frequently asked questions

Which Leica Rugby rotating laser should I choose?
Choose the Rugby 610 for one-button levelling, the 620 when you also set slope by hand, the 640 when you work vertically or at 90 degrees as well as level, and the 680 when you need to dial in a percentage grade on both axes.

What is the difference between the Leica Rugby 610 and 620?
Same body and the same working range with the same receiver. The 620 adds manual slope: the Auto/Manual button takes the X axis, the Y axis or both out of self-levelling and the arrow keys set the slope.

Can the Leica Rugby 620 dial in a percent grade?
No. The 620 sets slope by hand; Leica quotes manual grade control up to 8% in a single axis, but it does not dial in and hold a percentage. The Rugby 680 dials in up to plus or minus 8% on X and Y.

What does the Leica Rugby 640 add?
Horizontal, vertical and 90-degree operation with manual slope in both axes, Scan 90, automatic plumb down, adjustable rotation speed and remote control operation with the RC400. The Rugby 640G is the green-beam version.

What is Smart Slope on the Leica Rugby 680?
The Rugby 680 watches the temperature. When it changes by 5 degrees C (or 2 degrees C in FINE mode) the laser returns to level, checks itself and goes back to your grade.

Which receiver comes with a Leica Rugby kit?
It depends on the kit: the Rod Eye 120, Rod Eye 140 Classic or Rod Eye 160 Digital. The Rod Eye 160 adds a numeric readout, a capture function and anti-strobe protection. Each product page lists exactly what is in the box.

Are the Leica Rugby lasers waterproof?
The Rugby 600 Series lasers are IP67 rated for water and dust protection, with and without the battery fitted.
